Entry No. 17 — the San Francisco file — filed under: giant sculpture
Doggie Diner Head
A grinning fiberglass dachshund head in a chef's hat and bow tie — the sole survivor of roughly thirty identical heads that once crowned Bay Area Doggie Diner drive-ins — now stands alone on a traffic median at Sloat Boulevard and 45th Avenue as San Francisco Landmark No. 254 (designated 2006).
The move: Detour past it on the way to the Zoo or Ocean Beach for a two-minute photo stop; it's one of those things everyone drives past for years without ever actually pulling over for.
