Entry No. 12 — the Santa Barbara file — filed under: eccentric collector

Ganna Walska Lotusland

Polish opera-singer-turned-obsessive Madame Ganna Walska bought this 37-acre estate in 1941, first meant it as a retreat for Tibetan monks and called it 'Tibetland,' then spent four decades after her sixth divorce building a private cactus-and-cycad shrine — including three specimens of Encephalartos woodii, a cycad extinct in the wild, and a walkway lined with crushed blue glass.

The move: Book the 9:30am or 1:30pm timed tour (three weeks out is safest), walk the Blue Garden's glass-lined paths and the 500-plant cactus garden together, then talk about which one of you is secretly the eccentric collector.

Where: 695 Ashley Rd, Santa Barbara, CA 93108 (mailing address; entrance given at reservation booking)

Hours: Added 2026-07-20 — confirm current hours before you go.
