Dragon Room at The Pink Adobe

An elm tree grows straight up through the ceiling of this dim, low-beamed bar, and gnarled, Medusa-like vines crawl the walls above the fireplace — Newsweek International once ranked it one of the top 19 bars in the world. Georgia O'Keeffe and Robert Redford were regulars at what the owners themselves still call "a hidden nest where history and magic intertwine."

The move: Grab first-come seating (no reservations taken for the bar) under the ceiling-tree for a green chile stew and a margarita, then walk across the street to San Miguel Mission, the oldest church in the continental US, in the oldest neighborhood in the country.
