Ford Slope Mine

Opened in 1905, the Ford Slope Mine was once the largest and most productive coal mine on Cougar Mountain, plunging down five levels to a depth of 1,500 feet. The operation abruptly ended in 1929 after a devastating fire destroyed the nearby Coal Creek bunkers. Today, the mine's arched concrete entry remains visible along the trail, permanently sealed with concrete and preserved as an outdoor historical exhibit.

The move: Hike the scenic Rainbow Town Trail in Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park to view the sealed concrete mine portal, read the historical interpretive displays, and enjoy a picnic nearby.

📍 Before you go The mine is located within Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park and is legally accessible via public hiking trails, but the mine entrance itself is permanently sealed with concrete for safety and cannot be entered.
