Entry No. 47 — the Wichita file — filed under: speakeasy

Dockum

A craft-cocktail speakeasy hidden in the basement of the Ambassador Hotel, set inside the original brick-and-vault remains of the 1920s Union National Bank. Entry is through a vintage wooden door with a grated peephole.

The move: Slip past the peephole door and split a flight of house-bitters cocktails by candlelight inside the old bank vault.

📍 Before you go There is no street entrance: walk into the Ambassador Hotel lobby on South Broadway downtown and follow the RX pharmacy symbol to the staircase down, then knock on the wooden door and wait for the peephole. The hotel has its own garage and valet, so parking is the easy part. The room is intimate and the old bank vault is now a semi-private nook, so reserving ahead is smart on weekend nights; dinner upstairs at Siena Tuscan Steakhouse pairs naturally. The building's ground floor housed the Dockum Drug Store, site of the 1958 lunch-counter sit-in that predates Greensboro, and the bar's name honors it.
