Glen Alps / Flattop Mountain Dark-Sky Overlook
The Glen Alps parking area at the foot of Flattop Mountain climbs you up out of Anchorage's glow into Chugach State Park, with a wide panoramic view back over the city and Cook Inlet. In the dark months it is one of the closest spots to town where the sky opens up enough for real stargazing and aurora-watching without a long drive. Hike a little higher up the Flattop trail and the city lights drop further below you, though the path can turn muddy or slick after weather.
The move: Drive up to Glen Alps on a clear dark-season night, walk a stretch up the Flattop trail, and watch for aurora over the city lights with a thermos between you.
📍 Before you go A state-park parking fee applies at Glen Alps. Stargazing and aurora only work in the dark season (roughly late Aug-April); around the summer solstice it never really gets dark. Dress warm and watch for moose.
