Entry No. 32 — the Boise file — filed under: outdoor-weird
Silver City
Roughly seventy weathered 1800s structures still stand in this remote Owyhee Mountains mining town, never turned into a theme park and never fully abandoned, with many buildings still owned by descendants of the original miners. Reaching it means more than twenty miles of rough dirt road climbing into the mountains, typically passable only from Memorial Day through early October. The Idaho Hotel still takes overnight guests in antique-furnished rooms and serves meals through the summer season.
The move: Drive the dirt road in for the day, wander the wooden boardwalks among the original buildings, and book a night at the off-grid Idaho Hotel.
📍 Before you go Road typically opens Memorial Day weekend and closes with snow in early October; high-clearance vehicle strongly recommended; avoid driving right after rain.
