Fort Warren, Georges Island

A pentagonal 1833–1861 granite fort where over 1,000 Confederate prisoners were held during the Civil War (only 13 died there), with dark casemates, magazines and a parade ground you can still walk — and where rangers tell visitors the island's signature ghost story, the Lady in Black, if you ask. Open seasonally (roughly mid-May through Columbus Day weekend).

The move: Catch the harbor ferry out, explore the fort's Dark Tunnel and bastions on your own, then track down a park ranger before the last boat and get them to actually tell the Lady in Black legend out loud — it's better heard than read.
