Marysville Pioneer Memorial Building Museum — Haunted & Secret History in Helena

Entry No. 12 — the Helena file — filed under: offbeat-museum

Marysville Pioneer Memorial Building Museum

In the near-ghost town of Marysville, an old mining community born of the Drumlummon gold strike that in the 1880s and '90s was reckoned among the leading gold-producing regions in the world, this small volunteer-run museum keeps the town's story alive. Housed in the old Pioneer Memorial schoolhouse, the collection is local mining and pioneer artifacts gathered by the community of roughly a hundred residents who still live among the leftover structures. It opens only on summer weekend afternoons (Saturdays and Sundays, June through September), so it is genuinely a locals-keep-the-lights-on operation.

The move: Drive up the gravel into the half-empty town on a Saturday afternoon, poke through the little museum, then wander the surviving church and lodge buildings nearby.
