Fonthill Castle

Archaeologist and tile-maker Henry Mercer hand-poured this 44-room concrete castle himself between 1908 and 1910 - 200-plus windows, all different sizes, 18 fireplaces, and his own decorative tiles embedded in nearly every surface. A horse named Lucy helped hoist the concrete buckets.

The move: Take the 60-minute guided tour from tower to crypt, then walk over to the neighboring Moravian Pottery and Tile Works to see the kilns where Mercer's tiles were actually fired.
