Mahoning Drive-In Theater — After Dark & Night Sky in Philadelphia

Entry No. 19 — the Philadelphia file — filed under: drive-in

Mahoning Drive-In Theater

Opened in 1949 and down to as few as 10 cars a night by 2014, this drive-in survived by going the opposite direction of everyone else: it's now the only drive-in left in the country that screens every single weekend on 35mm film, with no digital projector on site, running horror marathons and cult double bills under a giant Cinemascope screen with help from Philly's own Exhumed Films crew.

The move: Load the car with lawn chairs, drive up for a 35mm double feature, and stay through the reel change on the second film — the projector clatter and the actual night sky overhead are the whole point.

Where: 635 Seneca Road, Lehighton, PA 18235
