L-Bird Flying Museum (Alamo Liaison Squadron)

A volunteer squadron keeps five WWII 'L-bird' liaison planes — a Stinson L-5, Aeronca L-3, Taylorcraft L-2, Piper L-4, and Interstate L-6 — in actual flying condition in a hangar at a small south-side airfield, built around Hardy Cannon's history of the unarmed spotter pilots who flew tubing-and-fabric planes over WWII battlefields armed with nothing but a pistol.

The move: Show up on one of their open Wednesday or Saturday hangar days, walk the flight line of five airworthy antique taildraggers with the volunteer pilots, and ask them to point out which model flew reconnaissance at Normandy — most visitors have never heard of an 'L-bird' before walking in.
