Ruins Trail of Pecos

The Ruins Trail winds through the archaeological remains of Pecos Pueblo, once a powerful trading hub of over 2,000 Towa-speaking people. Along the 1.25-mile loop, visitors can see the crumbling stone foundations of the multi-story pueblo and the towering, roofless adobe walls of the 1717 Spanish mission church. The site also features several subterranean ceremonial kivas, two of which have been reconstructed so visitors can safely climb down inside.

The move: Hike the easy 1.25-mile loop trail together, climbing down a wooden ladder into a restored underground kiva, and photographing the massive adobe ruins of the Spanish mission against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

📍 Before you go The trail is located within Pecos National Historical Park, which is free to enter and open daily to the public for self-guided walking tours.
