Pecos National Historical Park

The ruins of Pecos Pueblo housed more than 2,000 people at its peak around 1450 — by 1838, smallpox, raids, and emigration had reduced it to just 17 survivors, who walked away for good and joined Jemez Pueblo. The 1.25-mile trail loops past the crumbling adobe mission church and pueblo mounds, then crosses onto the Glorieta Pass Civil War battlefield, the so-called "Gettysburg of the West."

The move: Walk the self-guided ruins loop past the collapsed mission church, stand where a five-story, 2,000-person pueblo shrank to a handful of people over four centuries, then follow the trail onto the adjoining 1862 battlefield before the visitor center closes.
