Santa Fe National Cemetery

Established in 1870 to rebury Union dead from New Mexico's Civil War campaigns, this 84-acre cemetery has a genuinely forgotten-disaster story: in 1987, workers at the Glorieta Pass battlefield east of town unearthed an unmarked mass grave of 31 Confederate soldiers, killed in the 1862 battle and left in the ground for over a century before being reinterred here.

The move: Walk the rows at dusk past the nine Medal of Honor recipients and the graves of Navajo Code Talkers, then find the Confederate section and talk through how 31 men lay lost in an unmarked pit at Glorieta Pass for 125 years before anyone found them.
