Stoney Baynard Ruins

Constructed in the late 1790s by Captain Jack Stoney, this antebellum plantation mansion was built using tabby, a traditional Lowcountry mixture of crushed oyster shells, lime, and sand. After being seized by Union forces during the Civil War, the main house was burned to the ground, leaving behind only skeletal remains. Today, visitors can wander the moss-draped six-acre site to view the preserved foundations of the main house, slave quarters, and outbuildings.

The move: Pay the gate fee to enter the scenic Sea Pines community, then take a romantic, shaded walk under the Spanish moss to photograph the historic tabby ruins and read the interpretive displays.

📍 Before you go The ruins are located within the gated Sea Pines Resort community, which requires a small daily vehicle gate fee to enter, but the historic site itself is free and open to the public for self-guided walking tours daily from dawn to dusk.
