Duffy's Cut Memorial

A roadside Pennsylvania historical marker over an unmarked mass grave: 57 Irish immigrant rail workers, newly arrived on the ship John Stamp, died within weeks in August 1832 while cutting track for the Philadelphia & Columbia Railroad. The railroad blamed cholera for 180 years; forensic excavation later found evidence some were killed.

The move: Stand at the marker along the old rail cut for five quiet minutes, then spend the drive to dinner debating what the skull fractures the researchers found actually mean.
