Sculptor Wharton Esherick spent from 1926 to 1966 hand-carving his own hilltop home into an extension of his furniture - curved staircases, sculpted doorframes, and over 300 of his artworks left exactly as he arranged them. The 1956 Workshop was designed with Louis Kahn and Anne Tyng.

The move: Book the appointment-only guided studio tour, then walk the 12-acre grounds past the expressionist log garage and reconstructed outhouse before dinner in nearby Malvern.
